น้ำแข็งใส

Origin

Nam Kang Sai is a popular beverage that originated in Bangkok towards the end of the 19th century, first sold at night markets and street-side drink stalls. Inspired by Japanese kakigori, it evolved to suit Thai tastes by incorporating fresh fruits, beans, and various flavored syrups.

Characteristics and Flavor

Nam Kang Sai features finely shaved clear ice floating in a glass, topped with fresh fruits such as pomelo, watermelon, or job’s tears, along with assorted beans and sweet syrup. The taste is refreshing, moderately sweet, cool and invigorating, with a pleasant balance of sweetness from the syrup and natural fragrance from the fruits.

Ingredients

  • Finely crushed ice
  • Syrup (coconut, flower, or fruit-based)
  • Fresh fruits
  • Various beans (red beans, soybeans, job’s tears)

How to Serve

Stir well before drinking through a straw, or eat bite by bite with the fruits and beans. It is typically enjoyed in the afternoon or after meals.
